What is the Veil

The Veil is an ancient artificial boundary woven through reality itself. It was created in an age before recorded history, when the world did not possess the same stable separation between the physical and the immaterial that exists now. Its purpose was not simply to divide one realm from another, but to impose structure where none had existed before and to contain an ancient presence that could not be destroyed. The Veil is, in effect, both a wall and a lock: a system designed to keep reality stable while holding something far more dangerous on the other side.

Over time, the true purpose of the Veil was forgotten. The people who once understood how it worked became fewer, their teachings fragmented into ritual, superstition, and myth, and later generations learned to interact with parts of the system without fully understanding what they were touching. The Veil-Weavers once maintained its structure and repaired weaknesses before they became dangerous, but as their numbers declined, the system became increasingly fragmented. What remains still functions, but not evenly, and not everywhere.

Where the Veil grows thin, the rules of ordinary reality begin to loosen. Time can behave strangely, sound may vanish, shadows can move incorrectly, and places may feel subtly wrong long before anything visibly supernatural occurs. In more severe cases, influence from beyond the Veil can leak into the physical world, altering people, places, and living things. Many of the apparently separate supernatural phenomena within the wider universe—magik, transformations, hauntings, Wraiths, the Touched, and other distortions—can ultimately be traced back to the same underlying cause: a weakening boundary that was never meant to fail.
